New construction — what to consider when choosing joinery

From building orientation to profile and glass choice — the key decisions you make once and live with for 30+ years.

On new construction the joinery decision is often made too late — once walls are up and openings are fixed. Our recommendation is to involve the joinery contractor in the project stage, before openings are finalised.

Key decisions that should be made early:

Orientation and opening size. South-facing windows pick up solar gain — useful in winter, a problem in summer. With the right glass (g-value) and external shading (shutters or louvers) you can balance this. North-facing windows need maximum thermal insulation since they get no solar gain.

System material. PVC for residential — the best price-to-performance ratio. ALU for large glazed surfaces, facades and entrance doors where stability or a minimal sight line is needed. Wood-aluminium (wood inside, ALU outside) is the premium choice for those who want a warm interior and a maintenance-free exterior.

Glazing type. Triple glazing for passive and low-energy houses. Double glazing with Low-E and argon for standard new builds in warmer regions. Special glass — security, acoustic, self-cleaning — by room as needed.

Installation. RAL installation per DIN 4108 with three sealing planes is the standard recommendation. Poor installation can negate the best profile — this is not the place to cut corners.
